CASA Gives out Educational Goodies at Moss Point Back to School Rally
Friday, August 15th, 2008
The Gulf Coast Vetter Halves and Biloxi Quota Club donated all sorts of school supplies to the Jackson County CASA - notebooks, folders, crayons, pens, pencils, and more. And all of these learning tools are going to good use. CASA volunteers set up a booth on Friday, August 15th, at the Moss Point School Disrict annual Back to School Rally and handed out the donated supplies to excited district kids and their families. The school district holds this event every year to get the community pumped up for learning after a long summer break. All of the kids and teachers who filled bags with CASA supplies were happy to have some extra goodies to start school with this year.
CASA Inducts 17 New Volunteers into Organization
Wednesday, July 02, 2008
By APRIL M. HAVENS
Court Appointed Special Advocates for children hopes 17 new volunteers and a $3,000 donation will help fuel the organization's growth in 2008.
CASA volunteers take on one or two abused and neglected children cases each and act as an extra set of eyes and ears for the Jackson County Youth Court. They spend time with the children, their families and others, which helps the volunteer make recommendations for the child in court.
On Monday, CASA graduated 17 volunteers from its rigorous 30-hour training period, bringing the number of volunteers to 30, said executive director Frances Allsup. Additionally, there are 10 Friends of CASA, volunteers who don't take cases but help the organization in other ways, such as events and fundraising. Read full article

Forgotten Children Awareness Event This Week in Washington, DC.
This week (May 19-23), National CASA is staging the Forgotten Children exhibit on the Mall in Washington, DC to raise awareness of children in the dependency system. Each day, staff and volunteers will place 850 life-sized cutouts of children in an area in front of the Washington Monument.
These displays represent the 850 children who enter the foster care system each day. By the end of the week, 4,250 cutouts will stand in front of the monument. The children depicted in the cutout images will carry messages we have heard from foster children in our research. Each day of this week-long event will focus on providing solutions to a specific issue critical to foster youth.
The themes for each day will be:
- Monday: CASA Volunteers for Children. This day will kick off the Forgotten Children event with an appearance by CASA supporter and star of CBS Cold Case Danny Pino. Pino will be interviewed live on WUSA9 at 9:00 am. In addition, he will be doing a satellite television media tour that will be picked up by local TV news across the country. Given the nature of these tours, we cannot at this point confirm the stations that will be airing the satellite downlink.
- Tuesday: Faces of Foster Care. Fully 88% of DC area foster children are African-American. This day will focus on the overrepresentation of children of color within America's foster care system. Judge Glenda Hatchett and a former foster child will do live media interviews, including one for WTTG5 at 8:00 am and another for WAMU-FM later in the morning. Jet and Ebony magazines will be sending photographers to document Judge Hatchett at the site as well.
- Wednesday: Youth Banding Together. This day celebrates the efforts of young people on behalf of children in foster care with presentations to a youth audience and a formal awards ceremony recognizing 11 foster youth leaders. The ceremony will take place from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Rep. Dennis Cardoza (CA), Rep. Jim McDermott (WA) and Rep. Pat Tiberi (OH) are confirmed participants. Other members of Congress have expressed interest in attending as well. Youth throughout the greater DC area will be encouraged to attend. Michael Piraino, a former DC foster youth and a representative from the Freddie Mac Foundation will appear on NBC4's Wednesday's Child program.
- Thursday: The Voice of Older Youth. This day will focus on the needs of youth aging out of foster care and how we can ensure a successful transition to adulthood. National CASA will host a congressional briefing on this important topic.
- Friday: Program Close. This will be the final day of the event, with all 4,250 stand-up cutouts in place. This will provide the strongest photo opportunity of this dramatic display.
